4 Things to avoid when cleaning your mattress.

We are more and more aware of the importance of sleep hygiene and the quality of the air we breath while we sleep.

You wash your bedding in hot water every week, you dust and vacuum to manage the dust mite colonies and remove the allergy trigger. However cleaning your mattress is not an every day chore.  So when it is time to get rid of all the bacteria, micro-organism and dust mites foraging on your mattress, do not make these common mistakes.

1. Use excess water

  • Having kids is almost a guarantee that you will have liquid stains on your mattress. You may rush to grab a bucket of water and soap to remove the stain, but wetting the mattress should be avoided. By drenching the mattress in water, you give dust mites a drink (they don’t have mouths and absorb liquid through their bodies) and the trapped moisture can lead to mould.

  • Mattress manufacturers (e.g. Tempur and Ecosa) specifically warn about the damage water may cause to the mattresses upholstery and that warranties can be voided if water use was detected.

2. Use a beater

  • Whacking your mattress repeatedly with a beater may work well for anger management, but it is not an effective method to remove dust mites.  You literally just making dust mites airborne and they will settle back into the carpets, bedding and upholstery.

  • A much more effective way is to have your mattress cleaned by SafeSnooze which removes dust mites, natural build-up of skin cells, hair and dander from the mattress surface with our double HEPA filter vacuum.

3. Use a multi-purpose vacuum

  • Do not use any normal vacuum cleaner on your mattress. The typical multi-purpose vacuums are not built for handling upholstery and who wants to vacuum a mattress with the same vacuum you vacuum your floors?

  • Household vacuums are not strong enough to optimally extract debris from the mattress.

  • The SafeSnooze vacuum is a custom-built vacuum with a vibrating head and immense suction to get as much impurities from your mattress as possible.

4. Use steam cleaning

  • Steam cleaners do well when it comes to grease stain removal or any stains on a hard service. Most steam cleaners will even market themselves as having disinfectant qualities for killing bacteria or other various pollutants.

  • This is not true when a steam cleaner is applied to your mattress. In fact, the moisture from the steam can promote an environment where mould and other infestations can thrive, resulting in the opposite results of what you set out for in the first place.

  • You are also dependent on a hot sunny day to ensure your mattress dries sufficiently after a steam clean.  Who likes sleeping on a damp mattress?

  • A SafeSnooze treatment sanitises and disinfects your mattress with UVC germicidal light.  No liquids, no steam, no chemicals, no nasties.  The UVC light sanitises the surface of the mattress by disrupting the DNA of all known micro-organisms, dust mite eggs, dust mites, bacteria and viruses on the mattress.

  • The entire process takes about 15 minutes per bed and you can use your bed immediately after the treatment.
